CAP sessions
Pupils across the school had the opportunity to take part in three CAP sessions (Child Assault Prevention), organised and run by a team from the Devon Community Project CAP UK. Carol Service and Crib Blessings
Pupils from Venford, Fernworthy and Burrator all took part in our annual Carol Service in Buckfast Abbey Church. Each class also led a special Crib Blessing in each of the parish churches during December. Our Art Club kindly made sheep and angels to decorate the cribs with.
Apple Day
To celebrate the harvest of apples from our school orchard, St Mary’s held an Apple Day where children took part in apple tasting activities and used an apple press to produce their own apple juice. Each class also produced printed artwork around the theme of apples.
Healthy Humans Learning Afternoon
Fernworthy Class invited parents and carers into school to share some of their learning about ‘Healthy Humans.’ Each group had designed an activity or game for the adults to take part in during the afternoon. Community Dentist
The community dentist visited St Mary’s to teach pupils about how to care for their teeth and to help to protect them from decay. The disclosure tablets which were used by some pupils, enabled plaque to be revealed on their teeth and in turn, helped pupils to ensure that this was removed during brushing.
Doctor’s Visit
Doctor Kate visited Fernworthy Class to talk about the human body and how it works. Pupils also discussed how to stay healthy and how to care for their bodies.
CAFOD
Pupils in Fernworthy Class were visited by John Ingham from CAFOD, to hear about their Zero Hero campaign. Dartmoor Zoo
Fernworthy’s topic has been ‘Producers, Predators, Prey’ and so visited Dartmoor Zoo to learn more about food chains and how living things are related in these. During the visit, pupils saw all sorts of animals and learnt about their habitats. Some people even got to hold a stick insect and a snake!
Tree Power Project
Pupils from St Mary’s took part in a pilot for the new International Tree Foundation resources, called ‘Tree Power 2: Healthy Food, People and Planet’ which involved learning about sustainable, forest friendly and healthy food production and consumption.
