Pupils in Year 5 and 6 who carry out Buddy duties have been given Food Hygiene training, similar to the training that adults have when they are involved with serving or preparing food. To celebrate the harvest of apples from our school orchard, St Mary’s held an Apple Day where children took part in apple tasting activities and used an apple press to produce their own apple juice. Each class also produced printed artwork around the theme of apples.
Meldon Class enjoyed a visit from some local fire fighters and their fire engine, as part of their ‘People who help us’ topic. The children particularly enjoyed hearing the siren and seeing how water from the hose helps to put out fires.
Fernworthy Class invited parents and carers into school to share some of their learning about ‘Healthy Humans.’ Each group had designed an activity or game for the adults to take part in during the afternoon. The community dentist visited St Mary’s to teach pupils about how to care for their teeth and to help to protect them from decay. The disclosure tablets which were used by some pupils, enabled plaque to be revealed on their teeth and in turn, helped pupils to ensure that this was removed during brushing.
Doctor Kate visited Fernworthy Class to talk about the human body and how it works. Pupils also discussed how to stay healthy and how to care for their bodies.
St Mary’s pupils have learnt more about the way in which the government works through a visit from the South West Regional Outreach Officer for Parliament’s Education Service. Burrator pupils worked with local theatre company to create a ‘Play in a Day’. The title of the play this year was ‘Greece Lightning’ which fitted in well with their history topic for this term, Ancient Greece.
To celebrate the end of their Pirate topic, Meldon Class held a special pirate day with lots of different activities – pupils even had the opportunity to walk the plank!
This year Burrator Class took part in a number of activities as part of their residential trip. They visited Haven Banks Centre at Exeter Canal, where they learnt how to paddle board (although the water was cold!) and how to build a raft.
