Play in a Day
Burrator pupils worked with local theatre company to create a ‘Play in a Day’. The title of the play this year was ‘Greece Lightning’ which fitted in well with their history topic for this term, Ancient Greece.
Environmental Art Exhibition
All of the classes have been working on a range of environmental art and design technology as pat of the school’s Environmental Arts project. Buckfast Abbey’s Children’s Book Festival
Children from each class attended a book festival at the Abbey. We attended different workshops led by authors of a range of children’s books.
Mud Kitchen
Year 5 have been working with Claudia, Anna and Alison from the Abbey Education Centre to design and re-build our mud kitchen in the Woodland Area. Venford visited Dawlish Warren to find out more about the different mini-beasts who live in the warren and also in the pond there. Dartmoor Zoo
Fernworthy’s topic has been ‘Producers, Predators, Prey’ and so visited Dartmoor Zoo to learn more about food chains and how living things are related in these. During the visit, pupils saw all sorts of animals and learnt about their habitats. Some people even got to hold a stick insect and a snake!
Tree Power Project
Pupils from St Mary’s took part in a pilot for the new International Tree Foundation resources, called ‘Tree Power 2: Healthy Food, People and Planet’ which involved learning about sustainable, forest friendly and healthy food production and consumption. Devon Wildlife Trust – Hedgehog Awareness Week
Maya, from the Devon Wildlife Trust, came into school to talk to Fernworthy Class about taking care of hedgehogs as part of the work on Producers, Predators and Prey. Music lessons
Pupils at St Mary’s have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument during the school day. Lessons include guitar, piano, ukele and drums. The choristers also have singing lessons during the week.
Learning afternoons
Fernworthy, Burrator and Venford Classes have all prepared learning afternoons. The children shared their learning through teaching others about what they have recently learnt. Fernworthy ran a Roman afternoon, where they demonstrated a Roman battle march and even had also had special Roman food to try!
