Invaders and Settlers
Fernworthy Class have been learning all about Invaders and Settlers. As part of this history topic, pupils replicated Anglo-Saxon weaving techniques. The class also attended an Anglo Saxon workshop at Buckfast Abbey’s Education Department, which involved studying a range of artefacts. Art Club
This year our art club has carried out a number of projects. Some of these have related to craft activities, for example making paper mache money boxes and clay leaf impressions, to learning about famous artists. Both Piet Mondrian and Georgia O’Keeffe have inspired pupils’ artwork.
French café
Burrator Class used their language skills to good use by ordering food from a café – using their French vocabulary! The afternoon was a great success and some pupils were even confident enough to have their conversations recorded.
Newton Abbot and District Society of Arts (NADSA)
NADSA helped to organise a visit by musicians from Divertimento Quartet. Four musicians came into school to talk about being a professional musician and also their instruments: flutes, violins and cellos. When they played together, they created a beautiful sound! REConnect
During our ‘It’s OK to be different week’, pupils in Burrator Class were invited to the ‘REConnect’ event at Buckfast Abbey’s Education Centre. It is an annual event which gives pupils from local schools the chance to reflect on the bigger questions in life, using a range of different thought-provoking stations.
It’s OK to be different week
St Mary’s hosted an ‘It’s OK to be different week’, based on the book of the same name by Todd Parr. During the week, each class read a different text to focus their work. RED TED
To encourage reading in Meldon and Venford Classes, St Mary’s have run the RED TED scheme in school – Read Every Day, Talk Every Day. Each time a child reads with an adult and it is signed in their reading record book, they earn points towards prizes which are then presented in our Achievement Assembly… Read more »
