This year St Mary’s Catholic Primary School have been ‘going batty’ learning all about the Greater Horseshoe Bat, in collaboration with Helen Parr, from the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project. Children have spent time in their outdoor education sessions and also at the Abbey Education Centre, learning all about these mammals and how to protect their habitat. As well as learning about the physiology of the mammals, pupils have also played ‘bat’ games, created their own ‘bat roost’ with clay bats, participated in a number of bat craft activities and designed and flown bat kites!
Pupils are hoping that St Mary’s will be awarded the Bat Award by the end of the academic year, for its work in becoming a ‘bat friendly’ school.
